Is it important to communicate with student’s parent?

On Tuesday, January 14^th 2013 it was the last meeting of MMSEL class. It is time to prepare my final term. Actually, last topic is about study case and review about previous topic that presented by Dasrizal, Woro, Ulpan and Tyas. I like the idea for making reflection. How will you implement MMSEL course when you become a teacher? I think this is the important reflection, because we can reflect what we want to be after join this class since one semester.

MMSEL class is useful for me. It was because in MMSEL class there was so many topics explain about how we are supposed to do when we are become a teacher later. It was inspiring me, what should I do when become a teacher. Because the lecture not only just giving and explain the material but also share her experience when she was a teacher in kindergarten. So I can get more acknowledge how to manage classroom beside from my school experience program. In other hand, the role of teacher is not only to giving student material and manage the classroom but also have good skill to communicate with student parents. You know why?

          I think teacher and parents are good partners when giving education to the student. Because of based on my observation many student spending time in their home with their family. So, the teacher cannot control what they do in their home actually. I like the way of school that giving student agenda, commonly it done by low grade level in private school. It is because their parents can know what they have to do and what they done in the school. So teacher and parent are collaboratively control the student.

When I become a teacher later, especially in Senior High School, when student do the homework or test and I give the result and comment it.  I will ask the student to ask their parents’ signature. So, the parents will know their children ability and what did they do in the school. It is important thing I think. It was because when I was in elementary school there was a parent went to teacher home to complain about student report. She was very angry to the teacher, she think her children do best for all the homework and test. Why the result is just third rank in the class. She expect her children can be the first rank. Because, she though every day, every night the children go to “Bimbel” and study in the bedroom. The parents did not know the result of each student work since one semester so they did not know the improvement of the children, because there was just report at the end of semester.

So, communicating with student parents are different from the way you communicate with your friends or collegue, or with your own parents. It needs special skills if we did not any skills to handle it, it will be a problems I think. Now, I just know the other experience and the theories. Let’s see in the real life. Thank you :)
