Applying behavioral intervention in the classroom

For students to be successful in the classroom, their behaviors must be in accordance with teachers’ demand and academic expectation. However appropriate academic and behavioral skills allow students to become a part of the class, school and community around them. Unfortunately, today there are some behavioral of some students that interfere their learning and socialization as well as that of their classmates. Therefore, teachers need to have such a comprehensive classroom management plan which involves different strategies and physical design changes to help students engage in behaviors that support their learning and socialization with others.
Behavioral intervention, as describe in the last meeting of MMSEL class, I think it is a good idea to provide behavioral support to students who especially display the behavior of a misbehaving child. However as the educator candidate, I am just trying to reflect on my profession in the future that my task is not delivering material only, but also creating the environment which can lead my students to improve their behaviors to achieve success whether is it in school or in life. Since behavioral intervention can establish and maintain learning climate as mentioned above, these are the strategies that I want to apply to success the goal of conducting behavioral intervention itself.
·                              First, I am just thinking about before applying the behavioral intervention in the classroom, it is better to develop behavioral intervention plan which includes determine the target, behavioral goal, and specific intervention strategies. However, when we have already determined who the target is and what the goals are, we can easier to plan the strategies for the intervention, right? In addition, involving parents to withdraw consent for a behavioral intervention plan is also important to help teachers consider a change or placement that might be in program. Participation of parents really plays an important role especially for their children’s education and social development. As what I learn from the last meeting in MMSEL class, when parents are intensively involved in education activities, their children will do better in school.
·                           Second, in the implementation of the program, reviewing and rehearsing the classroom rules, informing students the consequences of misbehavior and using I message to express the disappointment toward students, I think it must to do in order to make students know what their teachers expect from them. However, when students knew what their teachers expect from them, they would take responsibility for themselves, try to act on the right path and yes, my experience said that it really help teachers address misbehaviors in order to increase appropriate behaviors that can support learning process in the classroom. In addition, giving reinforcement in every learning activity is also important. It is much better than giving reward because it can maintain the positive behavior in frequency.
In summary, I acknowledge that there must be barriers in the practice of applying behavioral intervention in the classroom. But, as teachers, besides of being creative, struggling in dealing with the problems that may prevent us from persevering in the important task of improving students’ behaviors to achieve success is also important. When we struggle, the great things will come to you:)
