Teachers’ characteristics

Hemmm,, let me ask you first! Who are your favorite teachers? How many are they?
Well,, If I ask you to name your favorite teachers from kindergarten through senior high school or even the recent study you take now and then to count it, it will be easy to answer, won’t it? However you will think about people who not only taught you things of value, but inspired you as well. Since it will bring back so many fond memories of wonderful people who've touched both your personal life and your professional life, I think it can also be an enjoyable question to answerJ
When I was in senior high school, I remember being motivated and interested in mathematics lesson since before I hated mathematics very much through most of my study in junior high school. Miss Puji, my first mathematics teacher in senior high school had successfully changed my mind to go back to like mathematics. In my first year, even though I felt far behind and unable to cope all of the materials delivered by Miss Puji in the classroom, Miss Puji never underestimate and denounce me as other teachers. She always supported me and taught me by her best way. She was looking forward to me and although she was often assertive and gave me a portion of a task that is a lot more than others, but I knew that she cared of me and wanted me to catch up my backwardness over my friends and be successful in my class. Compared with my previous mathematics teachers, of course I am more like Miss Puji because she was very kind, humble, care of her students and had enthusiasm for teaching.
As reflect to my experience, I realize that teacher’ characteristics have an impact beyond the classroom. If good teachers can improve their students’ financial prospects and give positive influence on all aspects of their students’ lives, while on the flipside, bad teachers can set students back years in their development. I know that being a good teacher is not simply as you may think. But, as teachers, you have to decide which type of teachers you want to be before you enter to the classroom. Is it bad teachers, so-so teachers, or good teachers you want to be? Of course, if you have a great passion to become a teacher and you think that teaching will be kind of fun activity that gives you opportunity to change lives then you will choose to become good or even great one for them.
On the while back, my lecturer said that in order to become good teachers, besides of having a deep content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge that reflect on the current knowledge of learner-centered, teachers need to have some characteristics such as personal qualities that can increase motivation to learn, meet needs for belonging and relatedness and increase perceptions of competence. Yes, I totally agree with that. However without all of those things, how students can engage and be successful in your class?
In summary, I just want to say that the role of a teacher in the life of his/her student actually never ends. Like the quote from Henry Adams, He said that "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell, where his influence stops." That sounds nicely, right? Yes, as you may know that with your students, you grow. You grow from your parent to friend to your society and to your own family; from caretaker to mentor and continue to influence students who admire you all their life. Exactly they remember you for what they have got from you and they are thankful to you for what you have taught them. That is one benefit of being a teacher - you are remembered for not a short time, but for a long time:)

Developing interest in the learning activities

When we talk about developing interest in learning activities, what the things emerge in your mind relating to the issue? If it is relating with using something interesting like games or hands on activities in the learning activities, in your opinion, is it enough to get all of students actively involved in the learning and get the concept of what you teach?
Based on my own experience, the role of teachers in developing interest in the learning activities is not just end up with providing students the tools that can promote involvement in the learning activities such as games, open-ended question or hands on activities, but the teachers need to know how to integrate the tools in the learning activities effectively in order to make students’ interests exist along the teaching and learning process taken place. As you may know that students’ interests are important in learning and in my opinion when teachers can establish a strong desire or feeling of need in the students, it is good for students because it plays a critical role in the development of one’s thinking ability.
Actively engage the students in the discussion about what the subject has to offer, how the subject can be useful to them, now and or the future and what value the subject can provide for students, I think it can be the next step that the teachers can do in order to keep students interested and excited in the learning activities.  However when teachers can assimilate those knowledge within the minds of the students, they will become sound and of course careful thinker, right? Since those conditions may also lead the process of associating the new information with importance in the students’ lives, I think it can be a great way for students to establish long-lasting connection between their previous knowledge or experiences and the current topic that is being discussed.
Developing interest in the learning activities, I know it is not the only element that should be in quality teaching, but it is likely being an important educational tool. When teachers can develop interest in the minds of their students, it ensures the information that they learned is not only retained, but applied as well. So yes, since the issue is crucial in creating the best learning experience for students, as the next educators, it is our responsibility to not only teach, but also to teach in a way that will make our students want to come back for more.

My Fourth Reflection of MMSEL Class

On Tuesday, November 6, 2012. The MMSEL class is doing performance. There were three performance from three group. Every group present the different topic and different performance. It was very fun learning.  Almost all of group present with the creative idea to deliver the material. It was very awesome. That was the challenging for me to be a teacher have to creative too. The things that I always remember from my lecture is she said that the learning process is not only have fun but also deliver the material as well as. I am learn a lot from my lecture. Who can guess that after the performance it will be a mini quiz. I was very shock at that time. But, it was effective. Because every group become pay attention to the group who doing the performance.

My group present with Drama Musical and the topic is about Self-regulated Learners and Teacher Characteristics. I hope my friends can get the material from the drama. Because that was extrinsic value from that drama. After we did the performance and mini quiz, the class not the end. Class is continue, my lecture ask the student to make an opening class. It is only for opening. Maybe, my lecture want to know her student capability to open the class.

From that activities, I can reflect that opening class is important to grab student attention. So, make a creative idea to open your class.
Thank you for read my reflection :)

Third Reflection about Climate Variables

On Tuesday, October 30, 2012  in MMSEL class I have learned about Climate, we discuss about climate variable. Climate variable consist of order and safety, challenge, and success. I can reflect from my school experience program. Since two week my school experience program in  SMA N 61. I teach 10th grade, the student is very kind and clever. I was teach in X-2 class for third meeting, in the first meeting I gave them a brainteaser to grab the student attention to me. The topic when I teach is inequalities. It is the first meeting for that topic. I always ask the student when I have explained the material, whether they are understand or not.

When the second meeting, I tried to give them project based learning in a group. That was the challenging for them, because commonly the teacher did not give the student project. I tried to give the problem with follow the bloom taxonomy until the creating step. It makes the student think logically and creatively. In other meeting, I have to make post test for them to test their understanding about the material, but there was no time for that. So, I gave them a post it and they wrote what they got from the teaching and learning process. Student reflection is very nice, they were support me to be a good teacher. As teachers I expected can implement the Climate variables.

4th reflection.

4th Reflection

At meeting on November 6, 2012. We discuss three materials; there are The Influence of Beliefs on Motivation to Learn, The Influence of Goals, Interest and Emotion on Motivation to Learn and Class structure, Self-regulated Learners and Teacher Characteristics. The three materials are presented by using different way. There are Kepo Quiz, presidential and vice presidential selections and Drama musical.

Then we also discuss Instructional Variables: Developing Interest in Learning Activities. We asked one by one to give instruction about one topic mathematics, like we introduce the material to be learned on the day. We study how to introducing a material that can make student interest in the material. I can conclude that in order to create student interest in the material, we connect the material to real life. For example Trigonometry, we invite students outside of the classroom to discussion how to measure the flagpole using Trigonometry without us having measure directly, then we can measure the trees in the school using Trigonometry too.

As teachers have to be creative to make students interest in learning activities or material so that students are motivated to learn.

Beliefs, Expectations, Teacher Characteristic

Wow!! My classmates are awesome. They presented expertly the idea of each topic differently. I am thinking that it should be the application of believe on motivation itself. We are expected to present the topic by our way, the lecturer's expectation at the previous meeting makes us try to find a unique and difference way in presenting the topic. The lecturer believed in us, we believe in ourselves, this is the way believes works. The expectation of the lecturer is like a guide for us to achieve the highest order thinking skills to create a presentation. That is why expectation of teacher is important to influence the learners.
About expectation and belief, actually I just found it is different term in this course. Moreover about the meaning, the really importance is about the application. In learning and teaching process, as a teacher we have to explain the learning objective and outcomes of the learning. Take a look deeply; this order is guide teacher to show their expectation to students. If this expectation is deliver in a good way, students will understand what actually they want to do and it influence them to reach that expectation. I have experience about this case at school experience program before. At the beginning, I do not really explain the objective and expectation to the students, it made them being not enthusiasm to do the activity. It was also written at their reflection, some of them wrote suggestion for me to explain clearly about what the meeting's objective. Well, I had done that because I race against time which is limited because of the subtraction time. But this is a failure because even if I have allocated the time perfectly, they got nothing from the meeting. They may do any activities that fun but they do not know what that is for. It is importance to be my own reflection to always give them motivation through explaining the objective at the beginning of meeting. Then I have to continue the motivation till the end of process. Beliefs - effort - control the feelings.
Another experience a got from this meeting is about teacher performance and characteristic. We already know that each of our students is individual who has different multiple intelligence and way of learning. Teacher have to sensitive towards their goals, it will guides teacher to regarded students as special. By regarded as special, students will motivate to do the best for achieve their goals. But teacher who careless will have difficulties to just find students' goals. That is why teacher have to have appropriate characteristic to build the students' motivation. One of the teacher characteristic is know the students name. Why is it important? Because by know the students' name, students will feel appreciated and it is also shows that the teacher care to students.
There is much learn that I got from this course, I believe of the teacher who can implement this course will inspire the students, and I want to be the part of it.

It is all about BELIEVE

“What I have learned will be useful for me in the future”

This week of MMSEL course, we have learn about The Influence of Belief on Motivation to Learn. These are Beliefs about future outcomes (expectations), beliefs about intelligence, beliefs about capability (self-efficacy), and beliefs about value.
Belief about future outcomes is about our expectation to the effort what we are doing now. As teachers and teachers candidate, we should be able to instill believe in them while studying in class because it will impact on their learning outcomes. If students believe to perform best for their future, then they will try to work hard on the learning process in the class. There is correlation between expectation and the effort. The more effort student does, the more expectation comes up to their mind toward their works.
Belief about intelligence is also important view that should be teacher’s concern for their students. As a teacher, we should know what our students intelligence. To know students intlligence will help us to esaily to deliver the material to them.
Beliefs about Capability, the belief that one is capable to do specific something. When someone believe about their cabability to do something, they will get the positive result or maximum result what they were doing.
The last is about belief about values. Attainment value is more about interest and capable to do something. Utility value is more about someone who doing something because some kind of no choice for them, because any demand to master something for reach the goal.
Fot the class today, I got a meaningful and fun learning on today’s session. I wish I can explore more about the self efficacy, belief, value and expectation for my self and also for my students. Finalyy, As a the topic that we have learned, I believe that what I heve learned today will be useful for me in the future. Yes, I believe it.
