“How will you manage well classroom?”
Hemt,, what a difficult question to answer it seems. Yes, as you may know that
there are many ways to answer that question. Again it exactly depends on the
backgrounds, cultures, learning profiles and needs of my students in the
classroom which I will handle. But the important thing that I want to highlight
in here before conducting those strategies is starting to think about the
question “is this strategy effective or ineffective to do?” I already knew that
classroom management helps teachers to create an effective learning environment
for students and there are many ways to manage these elements of classroom. Of
course as a teacher, I need to know about that issue since there are sometimes
effective and ineffective ways. However, as reflect to my experience during
school experience programs, the more teachers can understand the difference
between effective and ineffective management strategies, the more it will help
teachers a lot in gaining control over their classrooms and in facilitating
their students a better, more productive learning environment.
Effectively managing well classroom
can be difficult without proper planning and a set of structures and clear
expectations. So after thinking about the effective and ineffective management
strategies, I will decide which effective strategies that I want to use in
order to manage well classroom. Since before I have already said that there are
many ways to manage well classroom, I will only use 3 strategies to make it
narrow. First, I will take a proactive approach to bad behavior. Second, I will
keep maintaining a positive atmosphere and role modeling and the third, I will always
keep good students record.
Taking a proactive approach to bad
behavior, I think it is the most crucial issue in the classroom management.
Yesterday, I have already learned that classroom agreement can be the
alternative way to prevent common behavioral issues in the classroom. I
personally agree with the idea. Involving students in setting the rules and the
consequences of breaking the rules, I think it will be good for students.
However, with a set list of the rules and consequences, students will know exactly
what is expected of them. On the other hand, it will also be good for teachers.
Teachers can look out for the good of the entire classroom and yes, my
experience said that it help teachers to control themselves to not be sarcastic
toward students or engage in a power struggle.
Then, how about keeping a positive
atmosphere and role modeling? Why this aspect is important? As a student and
also an educator candidate, I feel this aspect cannot be left behind. However
it is not only meant for absolute control toward the classroom environment.
Rather, a positive atmosphere and role modeling can increase students’
interest, motivation and involvement in every learning activity conducted by
the teacher. It means when teacher can get it, he/she does not need to worry
about students successful in the classroom. By highlighting students’ good
behavior, giving reward/appreciation to those students who follow the rules, being
a good model for students and always show the happiness to be in the classroom,
I think those are enough to maintain a positive atmosphere when the teaching
and learning process taken place.
The last strategy is always keeping
good student record. For me, as the educator candidate, it is not only grading
students work and then recording those results into grade book, but is how teacher
dealing with students about the important of doing well on the task or assignment.
Beyond impact on students’ grades, it can show teacher the area that students
need help. However, when students are given a chance to see how and why they
received the grade or comment that teacher gave them, it can help students a
lot to set goals for themselves and explore
some ways in order to understand the concepts taught and improve the grades
through the next task or assignment.
In summary, I just want to say that classroom
management is very important aspect of teaching. However, once you can get your
classroom management strategies, you will find that teaching is an amusement
and your students will excel at learning.
