Reflection for the Second Meeting

After learning about extrinsic & intrinsic motivation and the theories of motivation in the first meeting, I was back to learn about motivation again in the second meeting. However, the topic was different namely the influence of needs on motivation to learn. In this meeting, I learned about three theories that talk about needs such as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, The Need of Self-Determination and The Need to Preserve Self-Worth.

The first is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. In this theory, Maslow conducted a hierarchy of needs model which can be divided into two parts such as deficiency needs as a basic need (e. g. physiological, safety, belongingness and love, esteem) and growth need (self actualization). In this hierarchy, Maslow said that one person has to satisfy on lower level (deficiency needs), and then it will make him/ her progressing on higher level (growth need). Unfortunately, there are some problems that will make someone in fluctuative levels, such as someone’s experiences. In addition, Maslow has noted that only one in a hundred people that can achieve the highest level, self actualization (person who realize personal potential, self-fulfillment and peak experience). It means that if someone wants to achieve higher level, there will be probability to step down, too. Why! It caused there is an experience that will influence them to step up to higher level.
The second is the need of self-determination. This consists of competence, autonomy and relatedness. Firstly, competence is a need which is related with intrinsic motivation. So, based on this theory, the students need a help to make them become motivated. Then, for this case, the teacher can help the students to find their motivation such as giving praise. The second is autonomy which is a chance for the students to decide their chosen. Example of autonomy is the teacher gives the students chance to make their own class regulation. The last of the need theory is relatedness. The students feel that they are belonging to the subject or not. This is students’ feeling which is being connected to the other in their social environment. The last need theory that I learned is the need to preserve self-worth. This theory says that all people have an intrinsic desire to preserve their sense of self-worth.
After I learned all theories, I thought that these are very important to be known for the teachers, because if the teachers do not realize about the need of their students, how pity the students are! As we know that, the teachers are facilitator. It means that, it is a must for every teacher to understand the need of each student to fulfill their needs.
