Classroom Climate! What Is That?

Classroom Climate! What Is That?
Dasrizal, 2010110019

It was the third meeting of the course MMSEL. I enjoyed the session since it was the first meeting after the School Experience Program. Therefore, there would be sharing moments among students based on the experience.
However, the sharing was postponed till the end of the session. Hence, we discussed about classroom climate and how it affects to students.
                Here is what I conclude…
There should be order and safety in the classroom. Order will make students get used to structured things when they attend the school until they leave the school. In the other hand, safety is also an important thing to be felt by students in the classroom. Safety is not only about physical thread, but also mental thread such as bullying which makes students’ self-esteem becomes low.  Students should get equal opportunity to receive information and express ideas.
By the end of the session, we were asked whether we already apply this classroom climate in the classroom along the School Experience Program. Some shared they already applied this in the classroom, some didn’t. Here is what I experienced in the classroom.
I was sent to Global Prestasi School and taught in class 1B. I liked the class because the kids were so good even though they were so crowded and hard to be ruled. However, I could learn many things from them.
About the order, I applied it a bit because I already created lesson plan and the structure of each session so that I didn’t make my students confused about what I was doing. About the safety, I got an interesting story about the safety.
Let say there was a student named A. He was a bit quite student and sat in the most left side of the classroom. When I observed that class, he was asked to come forward in order to solve a mathematic problem. However, his friends found that his trouser was dirt with ink that was poured by another student B. He felt so bad and got angry to B, and he cried without a voice along the session and B seemed so regret, yet he didn’t apologize to A.
In that time, I couldn’t do anything unless asked A to be patient and asked B why he did it to A. However, it didn’t solve the problem. I never knew what happened next after the class.
What I reflect here and relate to the topic I am studying right now, the class hasn’t provided safety place for every student. It is really a responsible of teachers (especially for homeroom/wali kelas) to find out the solution and make regulation of this.
Through this experience, I recognize more that being a teacher is not only making students understand the materials, but also to make students feel safe and enjoy the class. So challenging! I can nail it!
