The First Reflection for MMSEL Course

On Monday, September 24, 2012, I have learned about motivation in MMSEL course. I enjoyed the activities so much. The first activity was defining the motivation itself. Some of my classmates shared their definition of motivation. However, I had my own definition. For me, motivation is when my father have died and I thought that I had not done my best yet, and instantly,I got the spirit and became enthusiastic in doing all of  my activities. And then finally, I was be the best in National Examination (Ujian Nasional). So, I defined the motivation as a something that can make me being conscious to get the goals itself.
Moreover, there are two types of motivation. The first is extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation involves external incentives such as punishment and reward. For example, if the teacher always gives chocolate for every student that can get the perfect score for examination, they will depend on the chocolate that the teacher gives. However, if the extrinsic motivation is used well, it can make the students become enthusiastic. So, the teacher’s assignment is how to treat the students by using extrinsic motivation as well.
The second is intrinsic motivation. The intrinsic motivation is motivation that comes within the individual itself. For example, if Aluya got the lower score than her friends, Aluya thought that she has to do something to be better than before. So, she decided to study harder than before. She also spent time to read the material in her house. The motivation that Aluya has namely intrinsic motivation. However, the intrinsic motivation can be wrong for some reason such as the intrinsic motivation that comes from a thief to thieve. So, for this case, the teacher’s assignment is how to direct the students to have a good intrinsic motivation for a good impact.
In addition, there are four theories about motivation. Firstly, behavioral theories. It is about the motivation that can change behave of individual. Actually, it can be because of the influenced of environment around that individual. Secondly, humanistic theories. This theories considers about the human beings for individual. For example, the need to eat and etc. Thirdly, cognitive and social cognitive theories. It is about the sensitivity of human being to bring into reality become work well. Fourthly, Sociocultural Theories. It tells about the individual’s participation in communicating with others and their environment.
It is the end of my reflection during the MMSEL class. Overall, I really enjoyed this class and I think that this course is very important, as a teacher candidate, I have to know how to motivate my students and also the theories that talks about. It will help me in doing my profession as well.
